Earthquake Insurance in Glendale, Los Angeles & Across California
Standard homeowners, condo and renters policies do not cover earthquake damage. Earthquake insurance can help you repair your home, replace your belongings and pay for a place to stay after a major quake. As a local Farmers agent in Glendale, we help families throughout Los Angeles County and California add earthquake coverage through the California Earthquake Authority (CEA).
What Earthquake Insurance Can Cover
Dwelling: your home and attached structures, such as an attached garage
Personal property: furniture, appliances, clothing and other belongings
Loss of use: additional living expenses if your home is unsafe to live in, with no deductible
Emergency repairs to prevent further damage, such as boarding up windows (with no deductible on the first $1,500)
Building code upgrades: $10,000 included, with higher limits available
How It Works
Farmers is a participating insurer with the CEA, a not-for-profit, publicly managed provider of residential earthquake insurance. If your homeowners, condo, mobilehome or renters insurance is with Farmers, we can add a CEA earthquake policy, and you can add it at any time, not just at renewal.
Earthquake policies use a percentage deductible on the dwelling: 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% or 25% of your dwelling coverage limit. Some homes, such as those insured for more than $1 million or older raised-foundation homes without a verified retrofit, are limited to the 15%, 20% or 25% options. We will help you compare deductibles and coverage limits to fit your budget.
Ways to Lower Your Earthquake Premium
Retrofit discount: qualifying wood-frame homes built before 1980 on raised or other non-slab foundations can earn up to 25% off CEA premiums after a verified seismic retrofit
Earthquake Brace + Bolt: eligible homeowners may receive up to $3,000 toward a seismic retrofit
Deductible and coverage choices: a higher deductible or adjusted limits can lower your premium
Who Should Consider Earthquake Insurance?
Homeowners with significant equity in their home
Owners of older homes, especially raised-foundation homes built before 1980
Condo owners, who may face special assessments after a quake
Renters who want their belongings and temporary housing protected
Anyone who could not afford to repair, rebuild or relocate out of pocket
Good to know: earthquake insurance does not cover flood, so ask us about flood insurance too.
