California Raised Its Minimum Auto Insurance Limits: What Drivers Need to Know
For decades, California had some of the lowest minimum auto insurance requirements in the country. That changed on January 1, 2025, when the state's new minimum liability limits took effect under Senate Bill 1107, the Protect California Drivers Act.
What Changed
Liability limits are often written as three numbers. Here's how California's minimums compare:
Before 2025 (15/30/5): $15,000 for injury or death of one person, $30,000 for injury or death of more than one person, and $5,000 for property damage.
Starting January 1, 2025 (30/60/15): $30,000 for one person, $60,000 per accident, and $15,000 for property damage.
Starting in 2035 (50/100/25): The law schedules another increase to $50,000, $100,000, and $25,000.
Why the Minimum Often Isn't Enough
Even at the new levels, minimum coverage can run out quickly. A hospital stay after a serious accident can exceed $30,000, and $15,000 of property damage coverage doesn't go far when the other car is a newer vehicle. If the damages are higher than your limits, you could be personally responsible for the difference.
That's why many drivers in Los Angeles traffic choose higher liability limits, and some add an umbrella policy for extra protection.
Other Coverages to Consider
Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage protects you if the at-fault driver has little or no insurance.
Collision and comprehensive cover damage to your own car, and are usually required if you lease or finance.
Medical payments help with medical bills for you and your passengers.
What You Should Do Now
If you haven't reviewed your auto policy recently, it's a good time to check your limits. Your policy should already meet the new minimums, but meeting the minimum and being well protected are two different things.
